General Trivia[]
- His name is an obvious play on "Buddhist Monk", monk being a rank of practitioner, and also being the first syllable in the word "monkey".
- He is confirmed on several occasions to be a fictional character within the world of Happy Tree Friends, as episodes of his series, alongside video games and merchandise, appear semi-regularly in the main show, being consumed by members of the main cast.
- Interestingly, Lumpy is in every regular episode that he cameos in.
- The younger Buddhist Monkey wearing a dark afro and a track suit may be a reference to a famed martial artist Bruce Lee.
- All the titles of episodes featuring Buddhist Monkey are references to Bruce Lee movies (Enter the Dragon, Fist of Fury, Game of Death).
Design[]
- We learned in Three Courses of Death that Buddhist Monkey used to have a full head of hair, but when his sensei demonstrated the fire-making technique, the flames burned off his hair.
- The four dots on his forehead are known as Moxibustion scars. Moxibustion is an archaic form of traditional Chinese medicine in which the skin is burned using lit mugwart. Although the practice is considered dangerous in the modern era, it's still popular to depict traditional monks with these scars in fiction.
Episode Statistics[]
- Two episodes, Enter the Garden and Books of Fury, are considered as pilots of Buddhist Monkey. Three Courses of Death marks his third appearance.
Superlatives[]
- He is one of the two characters whose audible voice is based on the species of animal they are (since almost every sound he makes sounds like a real monkey), the other character is Lammy.
